I was thinking the other day that ghosts are real, but that we misunderstand them. The common story tells us that ghosts are souls who stick around looking to right a wrong, or finish something undone, but I think it’s the opposite.
What if ghosts are just the lingering doubts of the decisions we made, a precursor to regret haunting us as we move forward, letting us know what was ravaged, what got left behind.
From what I can tell, the road to success is strewn with discarded relationships, ruined ideals and betrayals, and yet most successful people tell you they have no regrets.
But maybe that’s the wrong question, “Do you have any regrets?” maybe the right question is, “What is haunting you?”
