This is one of my favorite times on a train. See mostly on the subway you are only visible to those in the same car as you. You live in this little world of noise, awkwardness and utility.
Then there are those times when a local and express train ride next to eachother. For that few seconds you are an underground vouyeur. People all of the sudden seem self conscious as they realize you can see them. It is a unsettling and beautiful moment.
