My kind of truck, spotted on a walk in Abu Dhabi

Liam caught me laughing

looking at this picture reminds me of this song.

I mean, it didn’t not make me nervous.

There I was in the front seat of a government owned taxi cab in Abu Dhabi, staring bleary-eyed at a picture of a text message on someone else’s phone that were allegedly directions to the after party Diplo would be attending. The most disconcerting thing was the structure of the directions. “Turn right at the green sign” “It is the 7th building on the left”: Abu Dhabi does not have or use traditional addresses so you are left to landmark navigation. Against all odds there we were laughing too loud at 2AM outside of the 7th building on the right, and I remember it being quiet on the elevator ride up to the “Health Club Level”. Un-oiled doors listlessly opened to darkness and low bass (did I mention I was feeling nervous). We walk as confidently as we can fake and low bass turns to a steady rhythm and darkness bleeds away to green light and a pool and there we are.

And you think, “My, how strange and wonderful life is”, you are on the roof of an unmarked apartment building in Abu Dhabi, drinking what is likely illegally purchased booze and rubbing elbows with Diplo and his crew and you have to think life is strange. Strange that having a blog can bring you half-way around the world, strange that you only met these people a few days ago and maybe most strange that you have forgotten to refill your drink…

The third leg of the Volvo Ocean Race will go from Abu Dhabi to China and we were in the Press Boats chasing the sprint out of town.

My favorite view of Abu Dhabi was through the wake of a Press Boat.
